My understanding of Magazines
Let's go way back to sixteenth century; the first magazine believed to be created was in 1663, by a German theologian and poet Johann Rist created a periodical called Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen which lasted for 5 years and during this course it mainly summarized new books and welcomed scholarly articles. Finally 1672 the first the concept of magazines unrelated to education appeared and this was introduced by Le Mercure Galan and Jean Donneau de Vizé, which contained news, songs, short verses and gossip, many scholars at the time critiqued this form of magazine. Seventeenth century was a time of increased literacy so the importance of magazine grew. It wasn't until 1731 that the word 'magazine' was invented
In 1842, British newsagent Herbert Ingram created the first illustrated magazine
Noe coming back to the current times: There is a huge variety of magazines depending on genre like: food, business, fashion, music, gender and age
In our class our teacher told us some basic facts about the production of magazines:
- Different papers have different grammage (weight) and magazines usually have a less grammage then the normal A4 papers we use for documents. If grammage exceeds 200, it becomes a card
- An interesting thing that I found out that in digital media black means absence of colour and white is a mixture of all colours where as in print media white means absence of colours
- The primary colours in digital media are RBG (Red, Blue, Green) where as in print media they are MYCK (Magenta, Yellow, Cyan, Black)
- Magazines papers also have a lot of texture options like: Matte, Glossy, Wrinkled Paper
- There are two types of magazines: Print and Digital
